Promote the status of the teaching profession, improve professional standards and terms and working conditions, and counter de-professionalisation trends

  • Initiate and lead a global conversation on the future of the teaching profession
  • Promote UN standards and instruments on teachers, including the  ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, the UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher Education Teaching Personnel, and the ILO Policy Guidelines on the promotion of Decent Work for Early Childhood Education Personnel
  • Establish and coordinate  a  global teacher and educator network in order to empower teachers and improve teaching and learning
  • Counter the employment of unqualified teachers, the erosion of teachers’ professional autonomy, the use of high stakes standardised methods of evaluating students, repressive forms of teacher evaluation and other de-professionalisation trends
  • Support effective recruitment and retention programs for teachers as a core strategy to ensure inclusive quality education for all and help meet SDG Goal 4, including through quality training, professional development and upgrading programs for unqualified and under-qualified teachers and improve school and institutional leadership
  • Promote professional standards and ethics, including the EI Declaration on Professional Ethics
  • Advocate for the establishment of institutionalized social and policy dialogue mechanisms between governments and education unions/teacher organizations, promote quality terms of employment, fair compensation of education workers and good working conditions
  • Oppose the commercialisation and privatisation of education and their damaging effects on professional standards, quality education and the rights of education workers.
