When Education International arrives at the Global Campaign for Education’s World Assembly next week in Johannesburg, its efforts will be focused on influencing both the Post-2015 Education for All framework and the sustainable development goals.
Over 200 participants are expected to flood the Global Campaign for Education’s (GCE) World Assemblyseries of events, dedicated to discussion, debate and shared learning for the civil society education movement. The event runs from 23-28 February 2015, in Johannesburg, South Africa.
“We hope for its World Assembly to help the GCE weigh heavily and push for great education targets and objectives in the Post-2015 global development agenda,” said Dennis Sinyolo, Education International (EI) Senior Coordinator, who is set to join the EI team in South Africa.
Right to Education 2000-2030 Public Forum
On 23 February, the opening of the World Assembly will be followed by the Right to Education 2000-2030 Public Forum, at which GCE members and allies from all over the world will gather to discuss crucial and emerging issues in education, with a focus on progress and lessons from 2000 to 2015, and on their goals as civil society for 2015 to 2030. The GCE co-founder and joint winner of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize Kailash Satyarthi will be keynote speaker at this event.
Civil Society Education Fund Global Learning Event
The Civil Society Education Fund (CSEF) Global Learning Event will also bring together from 27-28 February all national and regional members currently funded by the CSEF programme. It will provide opportunities for participants to share both challenges and successes and to learn from each other, to reflect on the progress of the CSEF programme so far, and to discuss plans for the next phase of CSEF.
The CSEF is a unique and ambitious programme that GCE has been managing, along with regional partners, since 2009. It provides funding, capacity support and networking opportunities to national civil society education coalitions in more than 50 countries across Africa, Asia Pacific, Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, to support them to engage with and influence education sector policy, planning and delivery.
This year is crucial for the whole development community, and for the education sector there could be no better time to come together to reinforce joint efforts to influence both the Education For All framework and the Sustainable Development Goals. In September, the UN General Assembly will decide on the Post-2015 global development agenda.
The World Assembly is the governing body of the GCE, of which EI is a founding member. It is held every three to four years and brings members of the GCE movement together to reflect on past achievements, to share knowledge, discuss current and emerging issues in global education and engage in shared strategic planning for the next four years.
