The EI Executive Board met in Berlin, Germany, from 27-29 March. Below is the list of the decisions taken by the Board:

“Educators joining together for quality education and social justice:” This is the theme that will unite more than 1,500 teacher leaders from around the world who will come to Berlin 22-26 July 2007 for the 5th World Congress of Education International (EI).

The 28th Executive Board Meeting will take place from 27-29 March in Berlin, Germany at the venue of the 5th World Congress. The meeting will mainly concentrate on the coming EI World Congress, which will be held from 22-27 July.

This is to remind EI member organisations that the deadline for the submission of draft Congress Resolutions is approaching on 22 March 2007.

Hugo Yasky, General Secretary of Argentinean affiliate CTERA, was elected President of the Regional Committee of Education International for Latin America on March 4th, at the EI Latin America regional Conference.

At the request of many member organisations, the request for financial assistance for Congress attendance has just been extended to 28 Feb!

The inaugural meeting of the new Council of Global Unions (CGU) is taking place today in Brussels, Belgium. The creation of the CGU marks a new milestone in the organisation and functioning of the international trade union movement.

The January/February 2007 issue of Worlds of Education, Education International’s bi-monthly magazine, is now available.

“Teachers in Europe: mobility and qualifications, recruitment, retention and remuneration” was the theme of the first joint EI Pan-European Conference/ETUCE General Assembly.

The 5th World Congress of Education International will be held in Berlin, Germany, 20-26 July 2007 beginning with Pre-Congress Meetings on Higher Education, Women, LGBT and the Indigenous People’s Forum.

Tom Mooney, vice president of EI affiliate the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) and president of the Ohio Federation of Teachers died of an apparent heart attack Sunday at his apartment in Columbus. He was 52.

The EI Europe Regional Conference and ETUCE General Assembly is taking place in Luxembourg between 4-6 December. The theme of the meeting is "Teachers and Lifelong Learning: Qualifications, Career Development and Status".

For the second consecutive year, Education International awards the Mary Hatwood Futrell Scholarship to three outstanding students at the George Washington University's Graduate School of Education and Human Development (GSEHD).

EI is pleased to announce an extension to the deadlines for receipt of notification of number of delegates and observers and requests for financial assistance from affiliates planning to attend the 5th triennial World Congress in Berlin, Germany from 22nd to 26th July, 2007.

Heads of both main Global Unions representing public employees, Education International and Public Services International, will meet on 21 November in Brussels, Belgium to discuss their co-operation and common agenda.

Already the largest of the global union federations, Education International continues to grow stronger. EI now comprises 384 member unions in 169 countries and territories. Together, they represent more than 30 million teachers and education workers across the world!

Education International welcomes the creation of the new global trade union centre, the ITUC (International Trade Union Confederation). The unification of the ICFTU and WCL with eight trade union centres previously affiliated to neither is a historic step by unions to meet future challenges.
