published 9 March 2007 updated 9 March 2007

Arsonists have attacked and destroyed the offices of the Sakarya branch of EI member organisation Egitim-Sen. Fortunately no one was hurt in the incident.

The attack occurred around 04:00 on 4th March, and it is largely due to the swift response of the fire authorities that there were no injuries. It is not known who was responsible for the attack Kadir Zeybek, chair of Egitim-Sen's Antalya branch condemned the attack in a press conference. He urged the government to bring the aggressors to justice in due time. "Provocative speeches made to gain political profits lead to the formation of cliques in society and as a result attacks towards those who promote democracy and rights increase. This last incident is not unrelated to the increasing nationalist-reactionary wave in the country". About a hundred people attended the meeting, protesting the attack chanting "Unite against fascism" and "we won't give into oppression".
