    Angola: teachers begin nation-wide strike on 22 Feb

    Angolan teachers will go on a national strike on 22 Feb to demand changes to their official status and timely payment of salary. Participants in the General Assembly of Teachers held on 16 Feb voted to go ahead with the strike despite continuous threats and harassment by the government.

    Macedonia: Union pressure pays off

    Following a protest of 3,500 teachers outside the Ministry of Education on 15 February, EI affiliate SONK (Autonomous Trade Union of Education, Science and Culture of the Republic of Macedonia) signed an agreement with the Minister of Education which meets all the demands of the teachers.

    EI's 5th North American and Caribbean Regional Conference was held in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, Jamaica, West Indies, from 22-23 January 2007.     On 14 November 2006 paramilitary gunmen uniformed as Iraqi National Police commandos raided a Ministry of Education building in Baghdad. Arriving without warning, they swiftly arrested roughly 100 members of staff whose names were on their list, along with others.

    France: teachers strike against the decree on "the service obligations of secondary school teachers"

    Half of all secondary school teachers in France responded to the call of their unions to participate in a one-day strike on 18 December. The teachers are protesting against the "decree on the service obligations of secondary school teachers" proposed by Education Minister Gilles de Robien.

    "Teachers should be guaranteed a safe and secure working environment," says EI in a letter addressed to the President of Iraq, Jalal Talabani, on 16 November. Since February this year, 180 teachers have been killed and up to 100 have been kidnapped.
