In September 2019, the Federation of Educators of the Workers’ Commissions (Federación de Enseñanza de Comisiones Obreras - FECCOO) submitted a hate crimes complaint against the organisation ‘HazteOir’ (Get yourself heard) to the Attorney General’s office and the European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) of the Council of Europe.

At the start of the school year,‘HazteOir’ had sent out a letter to all State education institutions, calling for written parental consent for children to take part in any sex education classes. FECOO argues that such acts violate basic principles of respect and tolerance.

FECCOO is calling for a national law to protect LGBTI persons in schools and other education institutions given these provocative acts which are inciting intolerance. In those autonomous regions which have legislation prohibiting discrimination on grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity, FECCOO is requesting that the actions of HazteOir be declared illegal.  Francisco García, General Secretary of FECCOO, stated “we must respect social consensus and leave behind the ethics and values of individuals and special interest groups because they only result in discrimination and confrontation.”
