Ron Thorpe, a dedicated advocate for quality education who championed the work of teachers for more than 40 years, passed away July 1st following an extended illness.
President and CEO of the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards in the United States since 2011, Thorpe began his celebrated career in professional development in 1974 when he started his first job teaching in Massachusetts.
In the years since, Thorpe has worked in various roles in education to ensure that teachers were developed to achieve the highest quality in the classroom.
“It is with great sadness that we must say goodbye to Ron,” said Education International (EI) General Secretary Fred van Leeuwen. “His great work in education and with EI will endure the test of time.”
Thorpe played an integral role in organising the first ever International Summit on the Teaching Profession, and was in New York with EI in 2013 to launch the Unite for Quality Education Campaign.
