On the eve of the World Day Against Child Labour, Education International’s African region is rallying member organisations to engage around initiatives to develop their capacities aimed at eradicating child labour.
Thirty-one representatives of teachers’ unions affiliated to Education International (EI), from Benin, Cote D’Ivoire, Ghana, Malawi, Mali, Togo, Uganda and Zambia, are gathered in Accra, Ghana, from 9-12 June, to share experiences on efforts to eliminate child labour in agriculture and securing universal access to quality education. Facilitators of the Foundation Eliminating Child Labour in Tobacco Growing (ECLT) in Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia are also present at the event.
The Chief Regional Coordinator, Assibi Napoe, explained that the workshop is related to EI’s on-going work in favour of quality education, “which cannot be achieved when 58 million children are not in school, many of them because they are engaged in child labour”.
The workshop, organised by EI, in collaboration with ILO/IPEC and ECLT, will enhance the participants’ capacity to influence policy and engage unions in championing the eradication of child labour in all its forms in their respective countries.
