EI strongly condemns the killing of Chokri Belaïd, a secular Tunisian political leader. In December 2012, the headquarters of the Union Générale Tunisienne du Travail (UGTT) union federation were attacked, and there were a series of violent repressions of demonstrations in Tunis and across the country.

This murder, on 6 February, marks an escalation of violence, which threatens the rule of law, democracy, and respect for human rights in Tunisia. It also jeopardises the social contract, which was recently signed with the Government.

This crime also threatens the achievements of the Tunisian revolution.

EI solidarity

EI stands side-by-side with its affiliated unions to invite all Tunisians to reject all forms of political violence.

EI also supports the general strike called by the UGTT for 8 February.

EI calls on the Tunisian authorities and all political forces to ensure the conditions for a democratic, open and peaceful dialogue.

EI expresses its condolences to the family, friends and supporters of Chokri Belaïd and joins the Tunisian nation in mourning his loss.
