Teacher unions and NGOs, including Education International, have played a critical role in limiting the inclusion of education services in the WTO’s GATS agreement, according to a new book by Antoni Verger of the University of Amsterdam.

WTO/GATS and the Global Politics of Higher Education examines how the education community internationally and in Argentina and Chile have successfully campaigned both locally and globally against the liberalization of trade in education services.

“The book is required reading for anyone who wants to understand the WTO and GATS, its relationship to education and, above all, the politics behind the education liberalization negotiations,” says EI Deputy General Secretary Monique Fouilhoux.
