In a recent study entitled “Education Quality and Economic Growth”, the World Bank explores the strong link between educational quality and economic growth. However, the study’s definition of educational quality and some of the measures proposed for improving educational quality may be controversial.
In an analysis of this approach, EI draws attention to a very narrow view of educational quality and a very simplistic view of its measurement. EI and its affiliated teachers’ unions collectively challenge the report's single-sided recommendations and focus on testing, competition and performance-related pay for teachers and school principals. On the contrary, EI calls for the legitimate and necessary increase of inputs to meet minimal conditions for effective teaching and learning - highlighting the importance of quality teachers for quality education.
