On 30 and 31 January 2007 in Berlin, 450 delegates from across Europe will attend the first ever European Equality summit to mark 2007 as European Year of Equal Opportunities as designated by the European Commission.

The summit is a joint initiative by the European Commission and the German Presidency of the EU.

The aim of the European Year of Equal Opportunities for All is to raise awareness of the advantages of a just and solidarity-based society. It advocates awareness-raising initiatives to combat discriminatory attitudes and behaviour and to inform people of their legal rights and obligations.

EI will be involved in activities organised under the auspices of the Year of Equal Opportunities to remedy the discrimination from which some individuals suffer because of their gender, racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, disability, age, or sexual orientation.

The next meeting of the EI Pan European Equality Standing Committee on 23-24 April 2007 will devote a session to the European Year of Equal Opportunities.
