EI is participating in a National Exhibition on Education in the Netherlands, which will be held in Utrecht from 23-27 Jan 2007.
The "Nederlandse Onderwijs Tentoonstelling" (NOT) or Dutch Education Exhibition is a two-yearly event where the public can browse through all the information and services provided by the education sector in the country.
As part of its human rights and awareness-raising activities on child labour, EI will have a stand at the exhibition where it will display 13 photos depicting the situation of child labour in Albania. The photos are taken by the Albanian photographer Mr. Begeja, and they portray both the reality of working children in the country and the participation of children and teachers in the fight against child labour.
In Albania, EI member organisations - the Trade Union Federation of Education and Science (FSASH-TUFESA) and the Independent Trade Union of Education of Albania (SPASH-ITUEA) have cooperated with the Dutch teachers' union AOb on a range of initiatives against child labour: capacity-building and training for members, lobbying and advocacy, publishing materials and programmes with teachers and working children. They also organised a regional seminar which brought together more than 10 unions from the region.
EI is part of the Global Campaign for Education, and endeavours to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and the Education For All initiative (EFA).
EI's other main thrust in 2007 will be to expand monitoring of child labour across the globe. A child labour mapping exercise now underway will give activists a clear picture of the forms of child labour in various jurisdictions, and the efforts teachers unions are making to support children to stay in school.
Below are the images of the photos that will be displayed at the exhibition. A pamphlet, entitled “Child Labour in Albania” has also been produced for the exhibition, and is available to download via the link below.
