Cambodia: CITA thanks EI affiliates for their international solidarity

Due to the international solidarity actions from EI affiliates around the world, Rong Chhun, President of the Cambodian Independent Teachers’ Association (CITA) was finally released on bail. Upon his release, he and other members of CITA thank colleagues around the world for their support and assistance.

Rong Chhun, was released on bail on 17 Jan 2006, after teacher unions wordwide answered EI's urgent Action Appel. Though he is now released on bail, charges against him for the defamation of Prime Minister Hun Sen still remain. EI will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Below is a copy of his letter in English, dated 1 Mar 2006. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- March 1, 2006 I am Rong Chhun, President of the Cambodian Independent Teachers’ Association (CITA), together with CITA's members, would like to voice the deep and profound thanks to leaders, colleagues and members of Education International (EI) have made notice of and made intervention to the head government of Cambodia in order to have my release on bail from Prey Sar prison.

Now, the head government of Cambodia has released me on bail and I have had the freedom because of your intervention assist. Your good deed is the kindness that I myself cannot forget forever. On the other hand, because of your intercession I have regained the freedom and have an opportunity to lead and work for teachers, workers and my nation to have the human right respects, and democracy.
