A campaign has been launched by the European Trade Union Committee for Education (ETUCE) to exclude education from the proposed Directive on services in the internal EU market, first presented by the European Commission in Jan 2004.
The draft Directive is currently being examined in the Council and the European Parliament, but the main focus in these months is on the discussions in the Parliament, due to hold their plenary debate and vote on 14-16 Feb 2006. The ETUCE will take part in a major demonstration in Strasbourg on 14 Feb. EI strongly calls on all member organisations to lobby their national MEPs as well as national governments to safeguard education from the trade provisions in the proposed Directive.
